National plan for Marine Protected Areas

Under the OSPAR convention and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Norway has adopted the goal of establishing an international network of MPAs by 2010 and 2012 respectively. One of Norway’s contributions to this network is a plan currently comprising 36 candidate MPAs. Read more

Coral reefs in Norwegian waters

Norway was the first country to implement protective measures for cold-water corals in Europe. The cold-water coral Lophelia is abundant in Norwegian waters, and the world's largest known Lophelia -reef, the Røst-reef, is located in Lofoten, in northern Norway. Read more
