Aquaculture Act

The Aquaculture Act regulates all aquaculture and sea-ranching activity in Norway.The act entered into force 1 January 2006, and replaced the Fish Farming Act of 1985 and the Sea-Ranching Act of 2001.

The main purpose of the act is to promote and enhance the profitability and competitiveness of the aquaculture industry within the framework of a sustainable development. The Aquaculture Act establishes the framework for the aquaculture industry’s future growth through a responsible management of national interests, such as the environment and use of the coastal zone.


The legislation is based on four special focus areas
• Growth and innovation in the industry - profitability and innovation in view of Norway’s international competitive situation 
• Simplification for the industry and public administration - greater efficiency and user friendliness
• The environment – modern and comprehensive environmental regime
• Relationship to other user interests in the coastal zone - efficient land utilisation

Other important Acts regulating the Aquaculture industry are Acts regulating environmental issues: The Food Act, the Animal Welfare Act, The Harbour Act .
