Aquaculture offers long-term supply of resources

The aquaculture sector throughout the world has great marketing potential. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the consumption of seafood worldwide is set to increase substantially over the next 20 to 30 years. In 2001 total consumption amounted to 99 million tonnes; the estimate for total consumption of seafood by 2030 is in the range of 157 to 174 million tonnes.

With limited possibilities of increasing production in the wild fisheries, the aquaculture sector represents a natural supplier of healthy, high quality seafood to the growing global population of the future.

The most important condition for this scenario is sustainable development of the aquaculture industry. The growth potential of the aquaculture industry is linked to its credibility in terms of environmental sustainability, quality and ethics. Based on these standards there are sound prospects for long-term supply of aquaculture resources.

Norway manages some of the world's largest and most productive coastal and sea areas. A long, protected coastline, good accessibility and a clean sea with a high water replacement rate and good water quality provide good biological prerequisites for Norwegian aquaculture production.
