The objective of inducing national salmon watercourses is to secure protection for the most important wild salmon stocks in Norway, especially against intervention and activity in the waterways, and against aquaculture in areas nearby.
Currently, there are 52 National Watercourses and 29 National Salmon Fjords located around the coastline. In these areas there are restrictions on activities considered harmful to the wild salmon stocks. In NSW there are restrictions on for example development of hydroelectric power plants and agriculture that affect the waterway.
Restricted aquaculture activities
Furthermore, aquaculture is prohibited if there is a risk for transmission of diseases from cultivated fish, or if it is possible that the farmed fish can escape from the aquaculture installation. In NSF the restrictions are mainly focused on aquaculture. However, the restrictions depend on the type of installation and in which fjord the installation is located. The consequences of the restrictions are that some aquaculture installations have to introduce additional protective measures, while others have to relocate outside the protected areas.
