Cod exists in various stocks
Cod is the most important saltwater fish in the Norwegian fisheries. It is easy to recognize with its beard under the chin. Cod is a common species in the North Atlantic and exists in various stocks from the seashore and down to the depth of more than 600 meters .
Several attempts have been made to engage in cod farming in Norway during the last decades, but many of these attempts have failed. In the meantime new research has been conducted to solve some of the difficulties which occurs with cod farming.
The farmed cod in Norway is descended from wild local stocks. After a few generations of development it is now feasible to control the quality of the brood stock. The last few years have demonstrated that it is possible to run a profitable cod fish farm in Norway. The development of a cod fish farming industry can complete the supply of cod together with the fisheries of wild cod. The total production of cod can therefore be more stable over the year.
