The Norwegian Aquaculture Industry

21.12.2010 // Aquaculture is a nationally important industry for Norway. The industry is located along the entire coast, and many coastal communities depend on the revenue and employment it provides. Aquaculture supports about 5 000 direct jobs, mainly related to fish farming and fish processing.

In addition, the industry creates jobs in a number of other industries such as transport, packaging, fish feed production and fish farming equipment development and production. The total number of jobs supported by the industry was estimated to 20 000 in 2008.

Norway is the largest producer of Atlantic salmon in the world, producing about 950 000 tons in 2010. The production of Rainbow trout amounts to about 50 000 tons. Cod, halibut, shellfish and arctic charr are also being farmed in Norway, although in smaller amounts.

Seafood exports accounts for about 6 per cent of total Norwegian exports. The value of exported seafood is estimated to NOK 54 billion (app. USD 9 billion) in 2010. Aquaculture accounts for more than 60 per cent of total seafood exports.
